U-18/U-20 CHAMPIONSHIP ZAMBIA 2023: TEAM NIGERIA HAUL 36 MEDALS TO CLINCH 2ND POSITION

Team Nigeria on Wednesday, wrapped the African Junior Championships in Ndola, Zambia, in second position behind tournament winners, South Africa.

*Tima Godbless won double gold

The athletes picked a total of 36 medals including 17 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals at the tournament.

The Nigerian trio of Tima Godbless, Samuel Ogazi and Faith Okwose made headlines at the meet as they won doubles in their events.

After her win over 100m, Godbless doubled back to win the 200m title in a time of 23.35s, running into a stiff 2.4m/s headwind.

Faith Okwose who won Gold in the 100m, won the women’s 200m in the U-18 category with a time of 23.31s (-0.2).

Similarly, Samuel Ogazi, grabbed Gold in the 200m and 400m events. The 16-year-old won Gold in the 400m event in 46.01s, the 2nd fastest time ever run by a Nigerian U-18. He then went on to win the 200m in a new PB of 20.93s (-0.4m/s).

Team Nigeria also won Gold medals in the relays – the U-20 men’s 4x100m, U-18 men’s medley relay and U-18 women’s medley.

Nigeria’s second place finish in Zambia is an improvement on her third place finish at the previous edition of the championship held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
