WHEN BREAD HAS NO BUTTER…

By Mava John Joshua

Now a Nigerian slang to describe a spoilt rich child from a very rich home, “Ajebutter” was originally a term used to describe a certain kind of really expensive butter that the average Nigerian could not afford.

After everyone in his life mysteriously forgets him, a young man is forced to seek help from the local bread seller after he realizes that she’s the only one who can remember him. With a very wealthy background, he would have easily depended on his family wealth but rather chose to hustle via legal means to make a living for himself and even expand the business empire of his boss; that is the summary of the movie, ‘Breaded Life.’

The movie follows the adventures of an arrogant and spoilt son, who comes from a wealthy home and is made to learn life lessons the hard way.

A young man (Timini Egbuson) left home after falling out with his mother (Tina Mba). In his journey through the streets, he falls in love with a bread seller (Bimbo Ademoye), the only one who accepted him after series of denials by others.

His life with the bread seller exposes him to the street university of hard knocks where he gets involved from the scratch as a labourer and rose to the top of the chain and became the beloved of his boss leading to expansion and his owning a business.

This is a 2021 Netflix Nigerian Nollywood movie, written and directed by Biodun Stephen and co-produced by Biodun Stephen, Tara Ajibulu and Kayode Sowade.

The movie can be said to be a spin-off of the 2016 romantic comedy, ‘Picture Perfect’ and contains some of the original cast members from ‘Picture Perfect’.

‘Breaded Life’ may have caught the bug in Nollywood that has made producers to use Internet Skit comedians. However, most of these new breed comedians over act; they just don’t know when to stop with their often times dry jokes!

MC Lively’s and Lizzy Jay’s roles were really brief but acted their roles well, though the excessive jokes of MC Lively almost seems he was doing much more than the script hence almost ruining the fun.

‘Breaded Life’ indulges viewers with drama, romance, humour and teaches many life’s lessons. The thought of losing one’s parents comes to mind in this drama and questions like: “How do I survive all alone when I have nothing?”  “Where do I go from here?”…are just part of the harsh realities of life.

Coping with denial from family and friends is one of the themes of the movie even as it brings to the fore the struggles a once rich kid could face against the backdrop of poverty.

The introduction of the Lagos street life was the icing on the cake and foremost actor, Bolanle Ninalowo showed how adaptive he could be in any role he is made to play in any movie. Showing his high level versatility, he interpreted the role perfectly well.
