THE RAYMOND DOKPESI I KNOW

By Fidelis Duker

High Chief Raymond Alegho Dokpesi was a man who would always be remembered as a trailblazer in the Nigerian private broadcasting industry. His innovation and vision led to the creation of Ray Power and Africa Independent Television (AIT) in 1994, which paved the way for a new era of media in Nigeria. He was truly a pioneer and an inspiration to many in the industry.

Aside from his groundbreaking work in broadcasting, he was also known for his generous and compassionate nature. He touched the lives of many people through his philanthropic work and dedication to giving back to his community. He was a mentor and a friend to many and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

I had several personal encounters from the days his residence at Victoria Island in lagos was used by my colleagues RALPH NWADIKE, TUNJI BAMISHIGBIN, CHARLES OWOYEMI and Late Chico Ejiro who became director after the brief exit of Tunji … Chief exhibited so much love for the Arts and entertainment industry.

Personally in 2007 during my annual Abuja International Film Festival, we needed to go on live broadcast for hours but unfortunately our sponsors had not paid but trust the Quintessential High Chief ….he was ready to support and guess what …..we paid a week after broadcast.  Need I mention the free numerous broadcast time for Abuja International film festival that he gave without any worry and many independent producers can attest to the benevolence of chief.

Even when I got a broadcast licence for Radio, High Chief was one of the few older colleagues who congratulated and prayed for me. The last time I spoke to him was on phone via Ambassador Nkoyo Touyo’s phone when we were comparing notes on the 2023 election results and he gave some informed arguments as a political strategist.

High Chief Raymond Alegho Dokpesi will be deeply missed, but his impact and contributions to the broadcasting industry and his community will never be forgotten. He will always be remembered as a very good man whose life was lived with purpose and passion.
