Nigerians are waiting with bated breadth to see the outcome of the Women’s 100m hurdles event at the 2023 World Athletics championships holding today in Bufapest, Hungary.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, who is the world champion, will be defending her title later in the day against a pack of world beaters.
Amusan on Wednesday, finished first in Heat 2 of the semi-final with a time of 12.56s to book her place automatically in the final.
She beat Jamacian Achkara Nungent 12.60s and Dutch Nadine Visser 12.62s to win the heat.
However, Amusan’s time in heat 2 fell far short from her challenger, former World record holder Kendra Harrison who won Heat 1 in 12.33s just as Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn took Heat 3 in 12.41s.
ahead of Nia Ali in 12.49s which means World record holder Amusan must improve her game to stand any chance of defending her title in Thursday’s final.
Amusan dazzled the world in the 2022 World Championship in Eugene, USA, coming first with a 12.40 (African record) before setting a new world record of 12.12 to smash the 12.20 world record set by Kendra Harrison in 2016.
