The Ondo State House of Assembly has put the impeachment process against the deputy governor, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on hold.
The Assembly made the decision after the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Olusegun Odusola, declined to establish a panel to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct against the deputy governor.
Odusola’s refusal was based on an interim order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which halted the impeachment process.
The Assembly’s spokesperson, Hon Olatunji Oshati, explained that they intend to comply with the court order and cease any further actions related to the impeachment. He emphasized that their intention is not to engage in a witch-hunt but to fulfil their oversight responsibilities. He also pointed out that the impeachment process is not solely within the Legislature’s control, as the judiciary has also played a role in halting it.
In the meantime, it has been reported that the peace reconciliation committee formed by the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to submit its report on Friday.
The committee, chaired by former Katsina State governor Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, has been tasked not only with intervening but also with facilitating the peaceful reconciliation of all parties involved.
The national party’s headquarters expressed deep concern over the political situation in Ondo State and believes that swift action is necessary to prevent further discord among party members. They have decided to step in to promote better understanding and work toward a peaceful resolution.
