PARIS OLYMPICS: CHUKWUEBUKA EYES SHOT PUT MEDAL AS AMAECHI, ANUMBA, ONYEKWERE CRASH OUT OF DISCUSS EVENT

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi yesterday, clinched his ticket to the final of the men’s shot put event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The 31-year-old threw a distance of 21.13m to finish fifth in Group B of the qualification and ninth overall, to make it to the final

The qualifying throw was Enekwechi’s first, failing to throw further in his second throw at 21.00m, while his third throw was a foul.

Enekwechi will be back in action for the final 6:35pm Nigerian time today (Saturday) for a chance at a podium finish.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian trio of Chioma Onyekwere, Obiageri Amaechi and Ashley Anumba were eliminated in the women’s Discus Throw qualification at their Olympic debut in Paris.

African Champion Ashley Anumba competed in Group A, where she started her campaign with a 57.23m throw, missed her second attempt, and eventually closed her competition with a mark of 58.83m in her last attempt to place 14th.

In Group B, National Champion Chioma Onyekwere and African Games Champion Obiageri Amaechi were in action. The former got her best throw of 60.78m in her opening effort, while the latter struggled to register a mark until her very last throw, where she recorded a 45.45m. The duo placed 15th and 16th.

In the overall standings, Onyekwere, Anumba and Amaechi placed 21st, 29th and 32nd respectively.
