EX-LAWMAKER RAISES ALARM OVER ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION IN BANANA ISLAND

Banana Island, known for its opulent residences and affluent inhabitants, is facing a troubling issue of illegal construction. Despite its reputation as Africa’s most expensive estate, where some of the continent’s wealthiest individuals reside, the island is grappling with violations of building regulations.

Hon. Niyi Oyemade, a former Lagos State lawmaker and commissioner for commerce and industry, has voiced his concerns over an unauthorized structure being erected next to his family property. The ex-lawmaker, who represented Ikeja at the State House of Assembly, is deeply troubled by the situation. He questions the fate of ordinary Nigerians if such violations can occur even to someone of his standing.

Oyemade’s house at 218 Close, Zone J, has been directly impacted by the construction. He has filed multiple petitions highlighting several violations and potential dangers, but to no avail. The new construction not only encroaches on his property but has also compromised the structural integrity of his home, causing the collapse of his fence wall and creating instability.

Despite a stop-work order issued by an agency of the Lagos State Government, the illegal building continues to rise. This raises serious concerns about the safety standards and engineering practices being employed. The absence of proper oversight and adherence to building regulations could lead to catastrophic consequences.

Environmental experts have also sounded the alarm, warning that the land reclaimed from the lagoon just four months ago has not been given adequate time to settle, posing future risks. Oyemade has called on the authorities to take immediate action to halt the construction and enforce safety protocols. His plea aims to prevent further damage to properties and protect the lives of residents on Banana Island.

The illegal building is being constructed by Attarhi Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Simeon Oladipo Adebo, Adedotun Rotimi Adeyemo, Obinna Anthony Chukwuneta, and Sower Sower And Messuarius Solicitors. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious construction activities to the appropriate authorities to ensure the safety and integrity of the community.
