The Abia State PDP 2023 governorship candidate, Sir Okey Ahiwe, has sent special greetings to Abians and Nigerians at large as the country marks the 2025 Democracy Day.
In his message to commemorate Democracy Day, Ahiwe urged a deeper reflection on the remarkable events that made June 12 an iconic date in Nigeria, an honest appraisal of the country’s democratic experience and a renewed commitment to the pursuit of democratic ideals.
According to him, “When we recall the fateful events of 1993 that made June 12 an iconic date in Nigeria’s democratic history, we may have cause to thank God that we are no longer where we used to be. But we must also honestly interrogate our journey and accept the challenging truth that we are not where we ought to be. So the best we can do to honour democracy at this moment is to renew our commitment to sustaining the advocacy for good governance, inclusivity, transparency and accountability, particularly in our dear Abia State. Virile opposition is the soul of democracy. Therefore we must boldly air our views, confront our fears, and unite across political divides in pushing for credible alternatives at all levels of governance in our collective best interests.”
Sir Ahiwe, while wishing Abians in particular a ‘reflective’ Democracy Day, said that 2027 offers yet another priceless opportunity to ‘redefine our democratic trajectory, erase the façade of superlative illusions, activate a realistic journey to freedom from fear and want, and eventually actualize the ideals that June 12 symbolizes.’
