The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced on Sunday that passenger train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route will recommence on Wednesday, October 1, accompanied by a new operational timetable.
This service had been suspended following an incident on August 26 that disrupted operations and raised concerns about passenger safety.
Callistus Unyimadu, NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, stated that the resumption reflects the corporation’s dedication to providing safe and dependable rail transport for Nigerians.
According to the updated schedule, trains departing Abuja will leave Idu at 8:45 a.m., make a stop at Kubwa at 9:05 a.m., and arrive at Rigasa, Kaduna by 12:42 p.m.
For the return journey from Kaduna to Abuja, trains will depart Rigasa at 2:30 p.m., stop at Kubwa at 6:02 p.m., and reach Idu at 6:23 p.m. Wednesdays have been set aside for maintenance activities.
Unyimadu emphasized that passenger welfare remains paramount, noting that out of the 583 passengers involved in the August 26 accident, 530 have been contacted, with 512 already refunded. All 22 injured passengers have been reached, with many receiving visits from the NRC medical team.
“To further cushion the effects of the incident, the 22 injured passengers will enjoy one free ride per week until December 31, 2025,” he said. “Also, all 618 passengers on board that day will be entitled to one free ride before December 31, 2025.”
The NRC called on passengers to cooperate with the new measures and reiterated its commitment to delivering safe, affordable, and efficient rail services.
“The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of all Nigerians especially train passengers during the period of the suspension,” Unyimadu added. “We remain steadfast in our mission to deliver safe, affordable, and efficient rail transportation that supports national connectivity and economic growth.”
