Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Funke Akindele has reached an extraordinary milestone, as her latest cinematic offering, Behind The Scenes, has surpassed the ₦2 billion mark at the box office—becoming the first Nollywood production to achieve this historic feat.
The landmark accomplishment was officially announced on Monday by FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s distributor. In a statement shared on X, FilmOne disclosed that the film has generated a cumulative ticket revenue of ₦2,103,039,706.
Describing the achievement as unprecedented, FilmOne confirmed that Behind The Scenes now stands as the highest-grossing Nollywood film in history. In addition to its domestic success, the film has emerged as the top-earning Nollywood release in both the United Kingdom and Ireland, further underscoring its international appeal.
The distributor also commended Akindele’s exceptional influence within the industry, hailing her as West Africa’s highest-grossing writer, director, and producer. Notably, she has made history as the first African filmmaker to lead the continental box office for three consecutive years.
At its core, Behind The Scenes explores the widely resonant theme of “black tax”—the financial and emotional responsibilities often borne by individuals in support of extended family. This compelling narrative has struck a chord with audiences across the continent.
FilmOne attributed the film’s remarkable success to its relatable storytelling, a strong ensemble cast, effective marketing strategy, and Akindele’s enduring popularity. Prior to reaching the ₦2 billion milestone, the film had already crossed ₦1 billion and later ₦1.77 billion in ticket sales.
This latest triumph further reinforces Akindele’s illustrious career, building upon the success of earlier box office sensations such as Everybody Loves Jenifa, and firmly establishing her as Nollywood’s most commercially successful filmmaker to date.
