FIFA ENDS NIGERIA’S 2026 WORLD CUP HOPES, CONFIRMS DR CONGO FOR INTER-CONFEDERATION PLAY-OFFS

On Wednesday, March 3, 2026, FIFA officially dashed Nigeria’s remaining hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup by confirming the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament.

The announcement follows the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) challenge to a controversial CAF play-off result from November 2025. Nigeria had alleged that DR Congo fielded ineligible players in the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw before DR Congo advanced via a penalty shootout victory.

However, FIFA’s recent accreditation notice to journalists for the upcoming tournament lists the six confirmed participating teams—Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname—with no provision for Nigeria or any appeal. The notice states clearly: “All six teams have now been decided.”

The inter-confederation play-off tournament, which will determine the final two spots at the expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup (co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States across 16 host cities), begins on March 26, 2026.

With this confirmation, Nigeria’s qualification campaign comes to a definitive end, leaving the Super Eagles sidelined from the global showcase.
