NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION: ENUGU STATE EXCEEDS NATIONAL TARGET OF 85%

The Enugu State government has announced that it exceeded the national immunization target of 85% in the 2026 Measles and Rubella vaccination programme.

The Health Commissioner, Professor Ugwu George, made this known at the Official flag off of Measles and Rubella Vaccination campaign in Enugu State held at Okpara square recently.

According to him, the success is attributed to a comprehensive team-based strategy involving coordination across gender, poverty alleviation, information, education, traditional leadership, religious institutions, and local government structures.

The Commissioner expresses gratitude for the exceptional support from the governor that has transformed the health system and demonstrates the effectiveness of integrated, synergistic approaches to healthcare delivery..

In his words, “Your Excellency, all our Primary Healthcare Centers and the cool-chain systems are getting the Measles and the Rubella vaccines and are being preserved at the right temperatures making it effective.

You have not left us unsupported, currently we are recruiting and employing in thousands of Primary Healthcare workers that you have given to us, and we are happy, that is why we are able to deliver on this assignment. We are most grateful for the support and the backing you are giving to the health system to make it better and it is really getting better.”

He commended the governor’s right engagement with the health workers and how he has ensured that their welfare are timely taken care of.
“Your Excellency, we are so happy that you are not only helping us to engage the healthcare workers, you are also looking at their welfare. Currently in our teaching hospital, everybody is saying they want to do internship in ESUT Parklane, some are saying they want to do Residency in Enugu State… This is because of the right infrastructure and the right leadership you have put in place in Enugu State,’ he noted.

The Commissioner praised the governor, Dr Mbah, for his notable achievements in healthcare, citing a recent visit by a National Assembly health committee team who commended his efforts and left with positive impressions.

Professor Ugwu, a respected Obstetrician and Gynecologist, told the governor that his efforts in improving Enugu State’s health sector had earned him global recognition, with people worldwide, praising his achievements, in an International conference organized by the University of Leeds in Ghana.

The governor who was represented by the Secretary to the state government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, described the vaccination exercise as “a sacred obligation” that the the government must do and noted strongly that “Our future is our children.”

He urged parents to take advantage of the remaining days of the campaign to ensure their children between 9-14 years receive the vaccines.
