TINUBU: NIGERIA OWES ENDURING DEMOCRACY TO ABDULSALAMI ABUBAKAR

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s longest democratic era stands as a lasting tribute to former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, describing him as a selfless leader who chose country over power.

Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered the message on Tinubu’s behalf at a glittering ceremony in the Presidential Villa Banquet Hall on Friday, June 13, 2026. The event doubled as General Abubakar’s 84th birthday celebration and the public launch of three books chronicling his life, military service, and pivotal contributions to democracy and peace in Africa.

Dignitaries including Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio and former South African leader Thabo Mbeki joined Nigerian leaders to honour the retired general. Tinubu praised Abubakar as a true statesman, soldier-democrat, bridge-builder and patriot whose integrity remains unmatched.

At a precarious moment in Nigeria’s history, Abubakar assumed power and promised to restore civilian rule. He delivered on that pledge in record time — just 11 months — handing over authority on schedule in 1999 instead of clinging to office.

That smooth transition birthed the Fourth Republic, Nigeria’s most enduring democratic period. Tinubu, a direct beneficiary of the process, lauded Abubakar’s vision, pragmatism and sacrifice, stating the nation owes its current democratic stability to the general’s principled leadership.

As the books capturing his remarkable journey were unveiled, the celebration became a powerful reminder of Abubakar’s legacy. Leaders described the occasion as both a birthday tribute and a national reflection on the values of honour, integrity and selfless service that continue to guide Nigeria’s democracy.
