Gospel musician Asu Ekiye, popularly known as “The Prince of the Niger Delta,” has announced the end of his 28-year marriage to his wife, Kunemofa Asu.
Ekiye made the disclosure in a public notice published on Facebook on Thursday, revealing that the marriage had actually ended about a year ago. He explained that he deliberately delayed making the development public to allow time for reflection and adjustment away from public scrutiny.
The singer described the decision to announce the separation as the outcome of a deeply personal period of growth, experience and reflection. According to him, bringing the marriage to an end was not a decision he was making in haste, but one he had come to accept with sobriety.
“After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to KUNEMOFA ASU has come to an end,” he said.
Ekiye said he had chosen to close the chapter with dignity and gratitude while looking forward to a new phase of his life. He noted that some chapters, regardless of how significant or memorable they may be, eventually come to an end.
The gospel musician further clarified that the separation was not a recent development, stressing that the marriage ended a year before his announcement. He said he intentionally kept the matter private to give himself and those directly involved adequate time to process the transition.
Ekiye did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the end of the marriage and made no allegations against his former wife. Instead, his statement centred on acceptance, gratitude and moving forward as he begins what he described as a new season of his life, signing off as “The Prince of the Niger Delta,” the name by which he is widely known in Nigeria’s gospel music scene.
