The Nigerian government has approved a N70,000 monthly transport support for all public service workers. The money will be paid to workers across all levels to help them deal with the high cost of transportation and living in the country, according to reports.
The special financial support will last for six months, starting from November 2026.
The government made this decision during a major peace meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Government representatives met today with the heads of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to discuss workers’ welfare. The meeting was called as labour unions put pressure on the government to assist workers who are struggling to pay for transport to work.
Apart from the transport money, the government also agreed to pay other outstanding monies owed to workers. They approved the payment of “peculiar allowance” arrears, which have been dragging since May 1, 2026. This back-dated money will be divided into three parts and paid to workers monthly, also starting from November 2026.
This N70,000 transport support is a separate intervention to give workers relief. Many civil servants have complained that their transport fares take up too much of their regular salaries due to the high price of fuel. This monthly support is expected to reduce the heavy financial burden for the next half-year.
Labour leaders and government officials are hopeful that this agreement will stop any planned strikes or protests.
