OJEZ ELDERS FORUM HONOR KING OF COMEDY, ALI BABA

Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, widely known as Ali Baba, has been celebrated as an iconic figure in a special November edition of the Ojez Elders Forum, on Sunday, rebranded as The Forum by Ojez. The veteran comedian received an award of excellence from Chief Joseph Odobeatu, the chairman of Ojez Entertainment, in recognition of his significant contributions to the comedy industry and his mentorship of emerging talents.

In a heartfelt acceptance speech, Ali Baba shared insights from his remarkable journey spanning over three decades in show business. He emphasized that his role extends beyond personal success; it encompasses nurturing the next generation of comedians by providing them with platforms, mentorship, and opportunities. “True success is about lifting others,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of empowering individuals to pursue their dreams.

Ali Baba’s influence on the Nigerian entertainment landscape is undeniable. Many of today’s household names credit their success to his guidance and support. He has been a steadfast advocate for good governance, youth empowerment, and social justice, demonstrating that comedy can serve as a powerful vehicle for societal change.

During the event, Ali Baba was humorously dubbed an “ancestor” in comedy, a nod to his longevity and the multitude of protégés he has guided, many of whom have gone on to mentor yet others. This lineage of mentorship speaks volumes about his commitment to the craft and his desire to see comedy flourish in Nigeria.

Effiong Nyong, the director of entertainment at Ojez, highlighted the transformative power of comedy in his opening remarks. “Ali Baba epitomizes the role of a comedian as an educator and inspirer,” he stated. “For over three decades, he has used humor to address critical social issues, becoming a voice for the people and a catalyst for change.”

The evening was filled with entertainment, including a captivating performance by a group of blind musicians who are part of Ojez’s empowerment program. Their medley of popular hits earned them a standing ovation and a surprise ticket to perform at Ali Baba’s annual Spontaneity Concert on January 1, 2025. Additionally, a dance performance by Crazy Legs, who is uniquely gifted despite being deformed from the knees, added an extraordinary flair to the event.

Special tributes from fellow entertainers Sunny Neji, Charles Inojie, and Elder O emphasized Ali Baba’s selflessness and the legacy he continues to build within the industry. The guest list featured Okey Bakassi and a host of top comedians, businessmen, and members of the diplomatic corps, all gathered to pay homage to a true leader

Chief Joseph Odobeatu expressed his satisfaction with the event’s outcome, promising that Ojez would continue to engage and entertain guests with a diverse lineup of activities throughout the Yuletide season and into the New Year.
