FLASH FLOODS IMMINENT AS THUNDERSTORM LOOM NATIONWIDE–NIMET WARNS

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather alert, forecasting a wave of thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall from Monday through Wednesday, with a stern warning about potential flash floods in several parts of the country.

According to the weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, northern states including Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, and Bauchi are expected to experience thunderstorms with moderate rain, especially in the afternoons and evenings. NiMet identified these areas as high-risk zones for flash flooding during the forecast period.

In the central region, cloudy skies and rainfall are anticipated in the mornings, particularly over Niger, FCT, Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa, with intensified showers expected later in the day. Plateau State was notably listed among areas with elevated flood risk.

The southern states won’t be spared either. Light to moderate morning rain is expected in Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra, followed by heavier rainfall in Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom as the days progress.

Monday: Thunderstorms in northern states; rainfall in central and southern regions. Flash flood alert in parts of Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, and Plateau.

Tuesday: Sunny with cloudy patches in the North; rainfall resumes by afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain expected in South-South states.

Wednesday: More rain across all regions. Northern zones like Taraba, Borno, and Yobe brace for thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall continues across Southeast and South-South.

NiMet urged citizens to remain cautious, stressing the importance of:

*Avoiding driving during heavy rainfall

*Fastening loose outdoor items to avoid storm damage

*Dressing warmly to cope with nighttime temperature drops

*Avoiding shelter under trees or unstable structures during storms.

Air travelers are also advised to consult NiMet’s airport-specific forecasts to ensure safety during flights.
