FEMI PEDRO RESUMES AS NIGERIA’S NEW ENVOY IN AUSTRALIA, PLEDGES STRONGER BILATERAL TIES

Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Australia and High Commissioner to the Oceanic region, Chief Femi Pedro, has formally assumed office following the presentation of Letters of Credence to the Governor-General of Australia on June 23, 2026. The ceremony, held at Government House, marked the official commencement of the envoy’s diplomatic mission to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and other Pacific states.

Describing the moment as both symbolic and action-driven, the ambassador emphasized that the event represents more than a ceremonial tradition, but a clear mandate to deepen Nigeria’s engagement across the region. The envoy underscored a commitment to advancing Nigeria’s strategic interests through strengthened diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations with partner nations.

Highlighting the growing ties between Nigeria and Australia, Ambassador Pedro noted that both countries share a dynamic and evolving partnership rooted in Commonwealth values, mutual respect, and expanding economic opportunities. Key areas identified for enhanced cooperation include critical minerals, agricultural innovation, education, and financial technology, sectors seen as vital to the economic futures of both nations.

The envoy also reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to attract investment and boost trade, stressing that the country remains open for business. He expressed optimism about working closely with the Australian government and regional stakeholders to unlock new opportunities that will benefit both Nigeria and its partners across the Pacific.

Addressing Nigerians living in Australia and the wider Oceanic region, the ambassador assured them of inclusive representation and active engagement. He pledged to uphold Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities centered on demography, development, diaspora, and democracy, while promoting national values abroad. “The world is watching Nigeria,” he stated, “and now, we must deliver.”
