As Nigeria’s creative ecosystem continues to exert positive economic impact on nation’s growth indices; requiring a corresponding skilled and labour workforce, through training, manpower and the provision of capacity building opportunities to the next generation of Nigerian filmmakers, two hundred and thirty-three (233) students today (August 12, 2026) matriculated at the National Film Institute, Jos, Plateau State.
The 233 students admitted to study film production will be awarded the Bachelor’s Degree in Film Arts after their four- or three-year studies at the Institute, Nigeria’s premier film training institution. The matriculation exercise, a statutory and mandatory activity for all admitted students to participate, formalizes their studentship, which comes with a pledge to abide by all academic and non-academic regulations, and by signing of the Students Matriculation Oath Form.
The semi-regimented and colourful ceremony, attended by parents and guardians of the students as well as friends of the institution and members of the host community, leaves much memory for the NFI, an institution which prides itself in providing unparalleled training opportunities for young Nigerians who desire to study film production and content creation/development, since its establishment in 1995 by the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC); as a centre of excellence for cinematography; and presently affiliated to the University of Jos.
Declaring the matriculation exercise open, Professor Tanko Ishaya, Vice Chancellor, University of Jos (Unijos), admonished the students to be of good behaviour and shun every activity that could ruin their studies. In a congratulatory message to the matriculating students, ahead of the ceremony, Dr. Ali Nuhu, Nigerian Film Corporation’s Managing Director/Chief Executive and Chairman, National Film Institute (NFI) Governing Council, charged the students to utilize the rare opportunity given to them to horn their skills and competences, stating that the future of Nigeria’s film industry will equally be shaped by their contributions; given the sustained impact of NFI’s training and skills development programmes on Nigeria’s film industry.
Principal officers of the National Film Institute (NFI), and the University of Jos in attendance at the matriculation ceremony included Prof. Hussaini Tsaku, Head of Theatre & Film Arts Department, University of Jos who represented Professor Tanko Ishaya; Dr. Rejoice James Songden Registrar, Unijos – represented by Mrs. Timbyen Rindam; Dr. Ali Nuhu, represented by Brian Etuk – NFC’s Director of Public Affairs; Prof. Pomak Tengya, Rector, National Film Institute, Johnson Iyaromi – Registrar, National Film Institute and Mrs. Esther Fakainde – NFC’s Head of Human Resources, among several others.
The National Film Institute Jos, holds annual matriculation ceremonies to officially induct new students and cohorts into its professional diploma, affiliated first and master’s degree academic programmes in Film Production; including Film Culture and Archiving Studies.
