‘FIX US’…EVEN IN OUR EXCESSES, ATROCITIES(FILM REVIEW)

By Mava John Joshua

Public Relations (PR) is about building, improving and maintaining the public image and perception of an individual, company or organization. Damage control on the other hand can be regarded as a twin of PR whose duty of PR department involves minimizing the negative effect caused by an event or series of events.

While many duties of a public relations department involve building the reputation of the employer, damage control is primarily about minimizing the negative perception caused by a crisis situation.

A crisis is sometimes the result of a deliberate action as seen in this movie where ‘Stars’ can’t control their appetites and lust, It might also be about something that the public relations department hoped to conceal from the public or hoped would not happen. Those involved in damage control are typically on call twenty (24) hours a day, and ready to minimize negative public perception.

An example of damage control could be the public relation department’s response to scandal about to happen or almost brewing in the movie Fix Us

The movie Fix Us is about Nadie (Yvonne Nelson) who seems much younger and the one who wants to explore love with a younger person Jojo (Tobi Bakre), another adventurous young man, who uses his charm and charisma as a poet to capture her heart and they ended up have multiple sex, though we see Nadia showing some pseudo piety as if she was not interested in the romance adventure

Chioma (Yvonne Okoro) so deeply in love with a married man Randy (Mofe Duncan) and is so obsessed to get married to the man by ensuring the man breaks up with his wife, this also leads to a serious scandal needing to be fixed

Furthermore Jaya (Alexandra Amon) seems to be more disciplined and much sober and that did not need damage control, rather used her resources to ensure she did not end up with a man that was not serious about their relationship but was more interested in anything under the shirt

These trio formed the crux of the movie.

In the beginning of the movie they all run into each other at the front of The welcome desk of the Audition Reception (Real Warri Pikin), here she tried to inject some dry humour into the movie typical of her anyway.

This movie basically follows the story of three actresses who are struggling to navigate the challenges of the entertainment industry but later overcame it. The film also explores themes of friendship, love, and the power of women supporting women.

After the audition, the trio formed an unbreakable friendship bound by their common dream to be megastars in the movie industry, and with their ambitions, drive and passions they rose to an unprecedented height and became influential and popular frequenting talk shows and interviews and also became rich

The low point in this movie is the lack of screen time given to the owner of the PR outfit, Wendy (Michelle Ator) which is the core of the movie, but the little time she got, she was explosive, decisive and showed that she is a goal getter and a ‘fixer’. She carried the character so well.

“This is a ‘Ghallywood’(Ghana film industry) film directed by Pascal Aka and produced by Yvonne Nelson.

Fix Us deserves some commendation for its portrayal of strong female characters and its exploration of issues relevant to the entertainment industry.

Overall, the movie is a heartwarming and inspiring one that celebrates the resilience and determination of women in the face of adversity.
