NIGERIA POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT FOR FEMALE SUSPECT OVER ALLEGED SAME-SEX VIOLATIONS

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to apprehend a young woman identified as Veronica Odije following her repeated failure to honor official invitations regarding alleged violations of the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act.

The investigation reportedly began after a group of women launched an “online challenge” on social media platforms aimed at showcasing same-sex relationships. While Veronica Odije was not among the initial group of individuals arrested during the crackdown on the campaign, she later became a person of interest following a forensic search of a digital device belonging to one of the detainees.

According to law enforcement sources, digital materials recovered from a seized smartphone allegedly depicted Veronica Odije, Lucy Ogbeche, and several others in explicit situations with a female partner. Authorities subsequently issued multiple summons for Odije to appear for questioning; however, she reportedly failed to comply with the requests.

The situation escalated on May 30, 2024, when police operatives conducted a raid on a residence believed to be connected to her in Lagos. The suspect was not found on the premises, and her current whereabouts remain unknown.

“Efforts have been intensified to ensure she is brought to justice, just as her associates who are currently awaiting trial,” a police spokesperson stated.

The case highlights Nigeria’s strict legal framework regarding same-sex relationships. Under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act signed into law in 2014, same-sex marriages and certain public displays of same-sex relationships are prohibited. Individuals found guilty of entering into a same-sex marriage or civil union face a maximum penalty of up to 14 years in prison, while those who register, operate, or participate in gay clubs, societies, or organizations may face up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Police have urged anyone with information regarding the suspect’s location to contact authorities as the manhunt continues.
