GTCO KICKS OFF 14TH ANNUAL AUTISM CONFERENCE WITH CALL FOR COLLECTIVE SUPPORT

The 14th Annual Autism Conference, organized by Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), commenced yesterday at the MUSON Centre in Onikan, Lagos. The event brought together advocates, caregivers, researchers, and supporters to foster awareness and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

In his welcome address, Mr. Segun Agbaje, Group Chief Executive Officer of GTCO Plc, underscored the significance of unity in promoting inclusion and innovation for those with ASD. “It is this collective support that has inspired our theme this year, ‘A Spectrum of Possibilities,’ which acknowledges and celebrates diversity amongst individuals,” Agbaje stated. He highlighted the progress made in raising awareness, fostering understanding, and championing the rights of individuals with ASD, emphasizing the ongoing need for innovative solutions that improve the quality of life in a way that resonates with Nigerian society.

One of the key speakers, Eniola Lahanmi, a seasoned speech and language therapist with extensive experience in working with children with autism, noted the strides Nigeria has made in addressing Autism and creating a sense of belonging for individuals with ASD. “For us, I think we’ve come a long way. Over the past decade, I think we’ve seen that a lot of people now know what Autism involves,” Lahanmi said. However, she pointed out that while awareness and education efforts have increased in urban areas, much work remains to be done in rural regions. Lahanmi emphasized the need to reduce stigma, advocating for an environment where children with autism can thrive through love and support.

Another panelist, Dr. Bernadette N. Kilo, a Cameroonian-born medical doctor and autism advocate, shared her personal experiences as a mother of three children with autism. Dr. Kilo’s insights highlighted the importance of raising autism awareness and providing effective support to families both in the US and Cameroon. Her contribution added a valuable perspective on the challenges and opportunities in addressing autism on a global scale.

The conference continues to serve as a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences, and advocating for better policies and practices to support individuals with ASD. The event’s focus on collective action and innovative solutions aims to drive progress in creating an inclusive society for all.
