Nigeria achieved notable diplomatic successes at the recently concluded 39th Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, strengthening its influence in Africa’s push for economic integration, peace, security, and democratic governance.
The standout accomplishment was the Council’s decision to award Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank (ACB). This important step highlights Nigeria’s pivotal role in shaping the continent’s financial future and advancing monetary integration across Africa. The decision also extends Nigeria’s involvement to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute—the key preparatory body for launching the African Central Bank.
These gains reflect Nigeria’s strong economic standing, technical expertise, and dedication to the broader vision of a unified African financial system.
On the peace and security front, the session saw the successful election of candidates jointly nominated by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the AU Peace and Security Council. This result demonstrates the unity and collaborative spirit among ECOWAS members in supporting stability and collective security throughout the continent.
Nigeria further showcased leadership in promoting democracy by hosting a high-level Ministerial Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The event drew participation from ministers, senior officials, and delegates from West Africa, other parts of the continent, and the international community. Discussions focused on bolstering democratic institutions, encouraging inclusive governance, and developing joint regional strategies to protect and sustain democratic principles.
