NOLLYWOOD MOURNS AS FOREMOST PRODUCER CHIEF TONY NKIRUKA (ONWA CHEZKAY) DIES AT 67

Nollywood is in deep mourning following the death of veteran executive producer Chief Tony Nkiruka, popularly known as Onwa Chezkay. The industry icon, who played a pivotal role in shaping the early years of Nigerian cinema, passed away at approximately 67 years old. Insiders have attributed his death to complications arising from diabetes, sending shockwaves through the film community and among those who benefited from his generosity.

In partnership with his longtime friend and business associate Chief Gab Onyii Okoye, better known as Igwe Gabosky, Onwa Chezkay produced several landmark films that helped establish Nollywood on the national stage. Their notable collaborations include the classic “Nneka, The Pretty Serpent” and its sequel “Nneka II”, as well as the sensational drama “Beyond The Vow”. Their final joint production was “Banned In Nigeria”, marking the end of a productive era for the duo often regarded as builders of the industry.

One of their most ambitious projects remains the epic “Battle of Musanga” parts 1 and 2. Widely considered the most expensive Nigerian film of its time, the production involved transporting a large cast and crew of hundreds of actors deep into the forests of Arochukwu for authentic shooting, with millions of naira invested to bring the historical story to life.

Gabosky expressed profound grief over the loss of his partner. In a message on his social media handle, he described the news as “a terrible news and very devastating loss.”

The late Onwa Chezkay who hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State is widely celebrated not only for his film contributions but also for his humanity, stylish fashion sense, and trendsetting lifestyle. He was eulogised in several albums by musicians who benefited from his support of worthy causes. His legacy of kindness and impact on Nollywood and the arts community is expected to endure long after his passing, as tributes continue to pour in from colleagues and beneficiaries alike.
