Rangers have been crowned Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, champions for the ninth time following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday.
The Flying Antelopes, coached by Fidelis Ilechukwu, entered the decisive fixture knowing that victory would seal the title, and they responded with a composed performance away from home.
Rangers started brightly and dictated the early tempo before Chidiebere Nwobodo broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark, giving the visitors a deserved lead.
Ikorodu City, who also needed victory to strengthen their push for continental qualification, struggled to contain Rangers’ attacking rhythm for large parts of the contest.
Nwobodo struck again 10 minutes after the restart, doubling Rangers’ advantage and putting the Enugu side firmly in control of the match.
However, Ikorodu City refused to go down without a fight. Moses Ali pulled one back two minutes before the hour mark to give the home fans hope of a comeback.
Rangers, however, held firm under pressure to secure the historic win and confirm their status as NPFL champions.
Elsewhere, Rivers United finished second after a convincing 3-0 win over Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Chijioke Mbaoma scored twice, while Aniekeme Okon added the third.
