The Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), has announced the launch of its inaugural DGN Awards and Directors’ Week 2026, marking a significant milestone for the Nigerian film industry.
The announcement made by Emmanuel Eyaba, Public Relations Officer of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, said the new initiative aims to celebrate directing excellence, foster professional growth, and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian filmmakers. The five-day event is expected to serve as a major platform that unites key players in the creative sector to drive industry development.

Set to take place from July 14 to 18, 2026, in Lagos, Nigeria, the gathering will bring together directors, producers, studios, distributors, broadcasters, investors, and policymakers. Organizers describe the program as a premier annual event designed to strengthen collaboration across the entire creative value chain while addressing both local challenges and international opportunities for African storytelling.
At the core of the celebration is the DGN Awards, a prestigious recognition system honoring outstanding directors who have made remarkable contributions to Nigerian and African cinema. The Awards Committee will be co-chaired by veteran filmmaker Mr. Yinka Akanbi and DGN National President Uche Agbo, ensuring high standards and credible selection processes for the inaugural edition.
Uche Agbo emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, stating it fulfills a key promise of his administration to reposition the Guild. “The DGN Awards and Directors’ Week represent a new era for Nigerian directors. This initiative is not just about celebration; it is about building structures that empower filmmakers, encourage excellence, create industry visibility, and open economic opportunities for our members and the larger creative ecosystem,” he said.
The DGN president further highlighted the importance of elevating directors both locally and internationally. According to him, the platform will reflect the power, creativity, and influence of Nigerian storytellers while establishing globally respected standards for recognition within the industry.
Beyond the awards night, the Directors’ Week will function as a comprehensive creative and business hub. Highlights include the DGN Annual Convention, expert-led masterclasses, high-level panel discussions on industry trends, a film and television market, curated screenings, and extensive networking opportunities for professionals.
Filmmakers across Nigeria and the diaspora are invited to submit entries for the DGN Awards through the FilmFreeway platform at https://filmfreeway.com/DGNAwards. The awards feature diverse categories including Best Director (Drama), Best Director (Comedy), Best Director (Epic/Cultural Themes), Best Director (TV Series), Best Director (Animation), and others such as Best Student Director, Emerging Female Director Award, and Best Director (DGN Diaspora).
The Guild has encouraged broad participation from filmmakers worldwide, positioning the event as one of Africa’s most respected platforms for directing excellence. Additionally, corporate organizations, investors, development institutions, media platforms, and diplomatic missions have been called upon to partner in making the historic initiative a success.
