Canada for the first time in the country’s history, advanced to the round of 16 stage at the ongoing FIFA World Cup after it defeated South Africa 1-0 in their round of 32 match yesterday.
Canada’s Stephen Eustaquio struck in stoppage time after controlling a cleared cross from Jacob Shaffelburg before firing a powerful first-time shot into the bottom corner, sealing Canada’s historic qualification to the last 16.

The match, which marked the first-ever knockout appearance for both nations, appeared to be heading into extra time before Canada’s Stephen Eustaquio delivered a late winner to break South African hearts.
South Africa had frustrated the co-hosts for most of the match, sitting deep defensively and limiting Canada’s attacking threats. However, Canada dominated possession and created several chances but struggled to find a breakthrough.
Canada came close before halftime when Moise Bombito’s header from a corner was cleared off the line, while goalkeeper Ronwen Williams also produced important saves to keep South Africa in the contest.
After the restart, Canada continued pushing forward, with substitute Niko Sigur and Tani Oluwaseyi coming close before Alphonso Davies entered the game in the 75th minute following his recovery from injury.
Davies immediately added more attacking energy and helped create opportunities, but South Africa’s defence held firm until the final moments.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4 as their World Cup dream continues.
