Nigeria’s D’Tigers have secured their place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar, with two sons of Abia heritage, Ike and Uche Iroegbu, playing pivotal roles throughout the qualification campaign.
The Iroegbu brothers delivered a series of outstanding performances during the African qualifiers, helping Nigeria overcome some of the continent’s toughest opponents on the road to booking a place at basketball’s biggest global tournament.


Their contributions, alongside stars such as Chimezie Metu, Wes Iwundu, Caleb Agada and Stan Okoye, proved instrumental in D’Tigers’ successful qualification.
Veteran guard Ike Iroegbu once again demonstrated why he remains one of Nigeria’s most dependable players, providing leadership, composure and crucial scoring when it mattered most. Their father hails from Uzuakoli in Bende Local Government Area, while their mother is from Umuawa Alaocha in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Although raised in the United States, the brothers have consistently embraced their Nigerian identity, representing the country with passion, commitment and pride.
Speaking in previous interviews with FIBA, the brothers described wearing the green-and-white together as a dream come true, expressing pride in continuing Nigeria’s rich tradition of siblings representing the national basketball team. Their journey has become an inspiration to young athletes across Nigeria and the diaspora.
