Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a scintillating attacking display to defeat Egypt 6-2 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after their final Group C match on Wednesday.
The defending African champions entered the decisive encounter knowing only a convincing victory would keep their hopes of progressing alive after suffering a surprise opening defeat to Malawi before bouncing back with a narrow win over Zambia.
Justine Madugu’s side responded in emphatic fashion, overwhelming the Pharaohs with six goals in one of the most dominant performances of the tournament’s group stage. Egypt managed two consolation goals, but they had no answer to Nigeria’s relentless attacking quality.
The comprehensive victory completed an impressive turnaround for the Super Falcons, who had faced intense pressure following their shock loss to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening fixture.
Nigeria reignited their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia despite playing much of that encounter with 10 players. That resilience laid the foundation for Wednesday’s commanding performance, which sealed their passage into the knockout rounds.
With qualification now secured, the nine-time champions have renewed confidence as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title and the chance to successfully defend their continental crown.
