PROMINENT POLITICIAN, CHIEF DAN ORBIH DIES AT 64

Chief Daniel Osi Orbih, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former National Vice Chairman of the party in the South-South, has died at the age of 64.

Orbih died on Monday, August 31, 2026, throwing his family, political associates and friends into mourning.

The announcement of his death was contained in a statement issued by the Orbih family and signed by Francis Udukhomoi Orbih on behalf of the family.

The family described the deceased as a beloved brother, husband, father and uncle, announcing his passing with “profound sadness and a heavy heart” and in total submission to the will of Almighty God.

The statement read in part: “With profound sadness and a heavy heart but in total submission to the will of the Almighty God, the family of Chief M.C.K. Orbih announce the passing of our beloved brother, husband, father and uncle, Chief Daniel Osi Orbih.”

Orbih was a longstanding political figure in Edo State and one of the influential voices within the PDP in the South-South.

Over the years, he played significant roles in the affairs of the opposition party, particularly in the region, where he was regarded as an experienced grassroots politician and party leader.

His political activities also brought him into close association with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State.
Orbih was widely identified with the political camp associated with Wike, particularly during the internal crisis that rocked the PDP following the 2023 presidential election.

Their political association remained visible in subsequent years. In January 2026, Orbih was among PDP leaders who felicitated with Wike on the occasion of his son’s graduation.

The death of Orbih comes at a critical period for the PDP, which continues to grapple with internal political realignments and leadership struggles as politicians across the country position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In announcing his death, the family said Orbih was survived by his wife, Mrs Florence Orbih; his daughters, Ms Winifred Anwosiobor Orbih and Dr Mildred Omonemi Orbih, as well as his brothers, sisters and other members of the extended family.

The family appealed to relatives, friends, political associates and well-wishers to remember them in their prayers as they come to terms with the loss.
“At this difficult time, we ask family members, friends and well-wishers to remember the entire family in their prayers as we mourn this painful loss,” the statement added.

Details of the burial arrangements, according to the family, would be announced in due course.

The statement ended with a prayer for the repose of the soul of the late PDP chieftain.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace.
