The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is finalising arrangements for the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) ahead of the forthcoming general elections, following consultations among the party leadership, its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., the party said Obi and Kwankwaso had been given the responsibility of nominating key campaign officials, including the Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), spokesperson, Deputy Spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director. The nominations are expected to be made in consultation with the party leadership.
The NDC said a comprehensive campaign organogram had already been developed and circulated to the presidential and vice-presidential candidates since August, while nominations had also been received from stakeholders across the country. The party added that a proposed campaign timetable was ready, but the inauguration of the PCC, initially scheduled for the first week of September, was postponed due to the presidential candidate’s travel schedule.
On campaign financing, the party said the Finance Director and his deputy would work with the National Treasurer to manage campaign funds, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in accordance with electoral requirements. It also appealed to candidates and their supporters to avoid internal disputes and concentrate on winning elections, identifying the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party’s common political opponent.
Meanwhile, the NDC has directed its state and local government chairmen to begin consultations with candidates and stakeholders to compile and harmonise lists of party agents for the general elections.
According to the statement, separate lists are to be prepared for National Assembly and governorship/state assembly elections and submitted within two weeks. The agents’ appointment committee is chaired by Deputy National Chairman (South), Comrade Babatunde Alli, with Vin Martin Ilo as Secretary and Dr Yunusa Tanko, Nafiu Dankura and the six zonal National Vice Chairmen as members.
