The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has asked political parties jostling for the November 2021 governorship election in Anambra State, to conclude their primaries between June 10th and July 1st, 2021.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, announced the date at the end of the management meeting of the commission on Friday.
Okoye informed that the Commission, has written to all the political parties that have indicated interest in sponsoring candidates for the election on their responsibilities and obligations.
While advising political parties to conduct valid primaries and avoid issues that could lead to avoidable litigation, Okoye stated that political parties seeking to nominate candidates must hold direct or indirect primaries and the aspirant with the highest number of votes at the end of voting shall be declared the winner of the primaries and the aspirant’s name forwarded to the Commission as the candidate of the party.
Okoye also directed parties to make the list of delegates available to the Commission as well as aspirants at least seven days before the conduct of primaries.
It would be recalled that INEC had set Saturday, November 6, 2021 as the date for the Anambra State governorship election.
