Nigerian security forces have reportedly eliminated a notorious bandit kingpin identified as Kachalla Auta during a fresh military operation in Zamfara State.
The reported operation is said to have taken place after troops ambushed a group of armed bandits operating around the Zurmi axis, with several fighters reportedly neutralised and motorcycles recovered.
According to the account circulating among security sources, remnants of the group later resurfaced along the Boko–Moriki axis, where they were engaged by troops in another fierce firefight.
Kachalla Auta was reportedly among those killed during the renewed engagement.
If confirmed by the military, his death would represent another significant setback for armed criminal groups operating across Zamfara’s volatile north-western corridor, particularly in areas around Zurmi and adjoining communities.
Auta has been associated with banditry, kidnapping and other violent criminal activities in Zamfara. Nigerian security forces have in recent years intensified operations against high-profile bandit commanders in the state, with several prominent figures killed in ground assaults and air operations.
In February 2025, the military announced the elimination of several high-profile terrorist commanders during operations in Zamfara and Sokoto, including Auta Gobaje, Kachalla Na Faransa and other senior fighters.
There is, however, a potential identity issue surrounding the latest report. A bandit commander known as Sale Ado Madale, popularly called Kachalla Auta, was reported killed by troops at Kunchin Kalgo in Tsafe Local Government Area in June 2025. Military authorities said the operation also neutralised several of his fighters.
It was therefore not immediately clear whether the latest report concerns another fighter operating under the same alias or is a fresh account of an earlier operation.
The development comes as security forces continue sustained operations against armed groups terrorising communities across Zamfara and neighbouring states.
The military has repeatedly urged residents to provide actionable intelligence on the movements of fleeing terrorists and bandits, stressing that continued collaboration with local communities remains critical to dismantling criminal networks in the region.
